The Ford Falcon AU series was possibly the most radical Falcon of all time
Ford Falcons had traditionally been large, boxy designs, right up until the EL ceased production in the 1998 model year. Ford spun the Falcon concept on its head in 1998 with the Ford Falcon AU series. The AU had dumped the lines for curves and it had stunned the Australian motoring public.
The styling was polarising at best, especially when it came to the sporty XR6 and XR8 performance models with their quad headlight treatment and optional double decker rear spoiler. While looks divided, the Ford Falcon AU was the most advanced Falcon at that point in time, with optional independent rear suspension, variable camshaft timing on some models along with improved green and safety credentials.
