New Honda Civic Type R is the wildest Civic Type R yet
Honda has taken the wraps off its new Civic Type R at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, ahead of the model’s European launch.
The new Type R will be built in in Swindon in the UK and will be sold for the first time under a Honda badge in the United States.
It has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding drive in the hot-hatch segment – both on road and on the race track.
The 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine has been refined and optimised to produce an impressive 235kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
To go with the extra power throttle response and driveability have improved with optimised engine control settings.
The 6-speed manual tranny has also been upgraded with the addition of rev matching control to deliver no compromise in its drivability.
Type R’s new chassis is lighter and more rigid, with the use of extra adhesive in key areas giving it 38 per cent torsional rigidity – and that translates to better steering and handling.
An enhanced selection of driving modes give the car greater usability compared to the previous model.
A new ‘Comfort’ setting sits alongside agile ‘Sport’ and track-focused ‘+R’ modes.
Each selection tailors the adaptive dampers, steering force, gear shift feeling and throttle response of the car on demand.
The wild new styling hides a more comprehensive aerodynamic package, including a smoother underbody, front air curtain, a lightweight rear wing and vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roof line.
The muscular, aggressive body has a best-in-class balance between lift and drag, contributing to greater high speed stability.
The Honda Civic Type R will go on sale here later in the year, with full specs, prices and features to be announced closer to launch.
