The most potent Volkswagen Golf R has gone on sale in Australia, starting from $51,990.

Volkswagen’s Mark 7 Golf flagship, the Golf R, has gone on sale down under and is equipped with a vast array of technology to make it go faster and hug corners more tightly.

The 0-100 dash is dealt with in a brisk 5 seconds and is served up thanks to the 2.0 litre EA888 turbo four cylinder engine shared    with the Golf GTI pumps out 206kW-up 44kW on the GTI-thanks to alternations to the cylinder head, exhaust valves, seats and springs, high-pressure injection valves as well as the turbo charger.

Buyers have the choice of either a six speed manual or a six speed dual-clutch transmission. The manual gearbox is now fitted with a reinforced clutch and a short-travel shift action, allowing for snappier gear changes. DSG adds $2,500 to the bottom line for a total of $54,490.

Power is sent to the tarmac via VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system which is operated by a Haldex 5 coupling, which works to minimise and in some cases eliminate wheel spin.

The new incarnation of the Golf R is equipped with something Volkswagen calls “XDL” at the front and rear axles. The system, which forms part of the electronic differential and works with the electronic stability program (ESP) to brake the inside wheels while cornering, over a wider variety of driving scenarios, delivering a sharper and more accurate steering response and finer handling and, greater grip.

New to the Mark 7 Golf R is The Drive Profile Selector, a part of the adaptive chassis fitted. Golf pilots can select between five programmes: Eco, Normal, Individual and Race, which also alters the shift pattern on the optional DSG transmission to facilitate more rapid acceleration.

Drivers can choose between two different ESP stages, with the more relaxed “ESP Sport” setting best suited to spirited driving and track days.
