Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid and Toyota Prado Hybrid Could be on the Horizon

Toyota patents hybrid 4×4 drivetrain, Land Cruiser hybrid and Prado hybrid possible

Reports have surfaced on the internet that Toyota has lodged a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office. The technical drawings provided highlight an electric motor – the electric motor is denoted as 70 – wedged between a ladder frame chassis designed to carry seven passengers.

The only seven seat ladder frame chassis vehicles in Toyota’s product portfolio are the Land Cruiser, the Prado, the Toyota Fortuner and the US-market Toyota Sequoia and Toyota 4Runner.

There’s no word on what combustion engine will join the electric components, but as Toyota has never made a diesel hybrid, it’s fair to say that the new 4×4 models will have petrol/electric power. There is the possibility of plugin hybrid and fully electric propulsion, too.

While the drawings don’t guarantee that a Land Cruiser hybrid and Prado hybrid models are coming any time soon, Toyota filing such a patent suggests they are investigating potential options with 4×4 hybrid technology in future.
