Tougher Toyota Hilux TRD Breaks Cover

Macho Thai-spec Toyota Hilux Rocco points to Australia’s next Toyota Hilux TRD

Images have surfaced of a mildly updated Toyota Hilux, with the Toyota Hilux Rocco serving as the range-topper.

While not confirmed by Toyota Australia, it is speculated that the Hilux SR5-based Hilux Rocco will make its way to Australia wearing Hilux TRD badging, and will be equipped with goodies such as 18 inch wheels shod with off-road tyres, sail-plane roller system, black wheel arches and other black exterior highlights.

While the new Hilux TRD looks the business – in our opinion anyway – some may be disappointed to learn that the Hilux’s 2.8 litre turbo diesel will remain untouched, and will still develop 130kW/450Nm, a radical departure from the supercharged 4.0 litre petrol V6 that powered the original Hilux TRD.

Critically, this could see Toyota in a spot of trouble when Ford launches its Ranger Raptor and other hot utes come to market.

Other changes that will be applicable to the entire Hilux range will include a more aggressive front-end that has clearly been inspired by the American Tundra pick up, and there are mild changes inside, which include a new instrument pinnacle.

The updated Hilux should arrive in Australia by the second half of 2018.
