Tokyo Motor Show: Mazda Kai Concept

Mazda Kai concept a preview to all-new Mazda3

The pretty hatchback pictured is called the Mazda Kai concept, and it’s important for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’ll be Mazda’s first production car to debut their Skyactiv-X engine technology, which features¬†Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition, a technology that allows for greater flexibility at high revs whilst offering the off the line urge and economy of a diesel engine.

In sum, you get the performance and smoothness of a petrol with the economy and grunt of a diesel. If Mazda gets this right, this could save the future of the combustion engine.

The Kai Concept is also important because it’ll morph into the new Mazda3, which has been a small car favourite since the first generation was launched back in 2003.

When the all-new fourth generation arrives in 2019, it’ll feature the Kai’s styling, be built on a new platform and feature that clever Skyactiv-X engine.
