Nissan is contemplating a fast Navara that will serve as a Ranger Raptor rival
Fast utes seem to the all the rage at the moment. Ford Australia has just revealed details of its twin-turbo diesel Ford Ranger Raptor, Toyota is supposedly plotting some sort of counter-attack with a Hilux-based product and there’ll be a powerful V6 version of Mercedes’ X-Class.
Now Nissan is thinking of getting in on the action with a tuned version of the NP300 Navara. Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, commercial vehicles boss Ashwani Gupta told motoring.com.au that “If you would had asked me this question yesterday [about a Ranger Raptor rival] I would have said this is not in our priority list,” he said. “But if you are asking this question today then I am saying this is an opportunity we would like to study.”
It should be easy enough for Nissan to tweak the Navara’s chassis to handle more grunt and possibly more of a beating off-road – if it’s to be anything like the Ranger Raptor – but the key challenges lie in finding a suitable drivetrain – they’ve used turbo diesel V6 engines in the past, perhaps these would make for idea candidates – along with how quickly they could design, develop and get the actual product to market.
More to come.
