More powerful engine rumoured for next generation Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins
We love the Toyota 86. We love its finely honed dynamics, its driver focus and its relative value for money. However, like many others, we’ve always thought it has been a little down on power.
Motor Authority has reported that Subaru has committed to the next generation Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ sports cars, and The Japan Times revealed that the new twins will be unveiled in 2021, and they’ll be powered by an all-new 2.4 litre Subaru Boxer engine.
While the new engine won’t be turbocharged, it will develop significantly more power than the existing 2.0 litre power plant. Expect around 193kW @ 5,600 rpm, and peak torque of 375Nm between 2,000rpm and 4,800 rpm. These numbers are a noticeable improvement on the current engine’s 152kW @ 7000rpm and 212Nm @ 6400-6800rpm.
Rumours also suggest that the new 2.4 litre engine will have a lower centre of gravity, for even better handling.
