Audi R8 arrives in Australia priced from $354,900 and up to 449kW
The second generation of Audi’s famed Audi R8 supercar has landed on Australian soil, with an entry sticker price of $354,900 for the Audi R8 and $389,900 for the Audi R8 V10 Plus coupe.
Both models are powered by a newly developed version of Audi’s 5.2 litre V10, with the standard car producing 397kW @ 8,250rpm and 540Nm @ 6,500Nm and the Plus version pumping out 449kW @ 8,250rpm and 560Nm @ 6,500. The Audi R8 will rocket from standstill to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 320km/h and the Plus completing the sprint in 3.2 seconds and will scream on to a top speed of 330km/h, making it the fastest production Audi in history.
The engine is clever too, with Audi utilizing cylinder shutdown technology, that reduce fuel consumption to 11.4 and 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres for the R8 Plus.
Power is transmitted to the tarmac via a seven-speed dual clutch S Tronic transmission and an updated version of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system, which, unlike previous versions where torque distribution was fixed, the new system shifts power depending on driving conditions.
The new Audi R8 is light too, with Audi forming the chassis from their new Audi Space Frame, which blends aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) to construct the passenger cell. The use of these materials allows for a 40 per cent increase in torsional rigidity over the previous R8, while reducing weight by 200kg.
The R8 rides on wishbone suspension, there’s also a sealed underside and the R8 V10 Plus has a rear spoiler and diffuser combination that can provide 100kg of downforce at speed.
Andrew Doyle, Managing Director of Audi Australia said the new R8 has evolved the concept of the every day sports car even further “the all-new second generation Audi R8 pushes the boundaries of what is possible for a modern supercar, while its sharper design hints at the progress that has been made beneath the skin. The new R8 is faster than its predecessor, and boasts technology that rightly positions the Audi Sport brand as an innovator, even among its highly desirable competition.
“This second-generation R8 has lost none of the versatility that helped make it so popular in the first place. It’s just as comfortable and pleasurable to drive as an everyday mode of transport on urban roads as it is on hallowed racetracks around the world, or driven along some of our finest touring routes,” Doyle added.
