New Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest amongst others to receive maximum safety rating
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has published a list of the latest cars to be awarded its 5 star safety rating.
Recipients are the locally developed Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner SUVs, the Ford Ranger Mark II, the forthcoming Volkswagen Passat and perhaps most predictably, the Volvo XC90. The updated Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus IS luxury sedan were also deemed 5 star worthy.
ANCAP Chief Executive Officer James Goodwin said that the Volvo and Lexus have automatic braking which should be a must have for consumers “the Volvo XC90 and Lexus IS both have Autonomous Electronic Braking (AEB) fitted as standard across all variants and we urge new car buyers to ask for this potentially life-saving technology when looking for a new vehicle.”
The percentage of vehicles that have obtained the 5 star ANCAP safety rating have increased significantly over time “the proportion of models achieving a 5 star ANCAP safety rating has gradually increased from zero in 2002 to 77 per cent of rated models on sale today” Mr Goodwin added.
