New turbo engine gives Suzuki Vitara much needed zest

The Suzuki Vitara has been a car that caught our attention for a number of reasons: it looks great, it’s excellent value and it’s generally fun to drive, minus the crash ride.

However, there was one glaring issue we found with our naturally aspirated Vitara RT-X test car – the engine. As previously mentioned, the engine itself isn’t a bad unit, it just seems to be overwhelmed with the Vitara’s bulk and it lets the whole package down.

Suzuki has answered our prayers with the new Vitara Turbo. We’re testing the Vitara S Turbo front wheel drive this week and we have found that the new turbo engine and conventional six-speed automatic are not only smooth and refined, but the new engine has surprising shove, despite its small 1.4 litre capacity.
