Cheaper Golf R Grid Edition and GTI Original to head down under
Volkswagen has announced that they’ll be selling two limited edition sporty Golf models to appeal to hot hatch enthusiasts.
The first is the Golf GTI Original. As the name suggests, the Golf GTI Original is inspired by the original – and legendary – Mark I Golf GTI and is offered exclusively in a three-door body. Volkswagen hasn’t revealed an exact price, but they have hinted that it will be below the $40,000 mark. Don’t worry, though. Just because the GTI Original is cheaper than the standard Golf GTI doesn’t mean it misses out on power, they both share the same 169kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbo petrol which can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG transmission.
The hotter special edition raunchy Golf is the Golf R Grid Edition. The Golf R Grid Edition shares the same 208kW/380Nm 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine – which is mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG that send power to all four wheels as – the Golf R hatch, wagon and Wolfsburg Edition, but will be priced below $50,000.
The Golf R Grid Edition will be available in hatch and wagon body styles.
Volkswagen Australia is describes the Golf R Grid Edition as “a lean and mean version of the Golf R 7.5” potentially suggesting that equipment levels mightn’t be as flash as its more expensive siblings.
The Golf R Grid Edition will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2017 and the GTI Original will roll into showrooms from early 2018.
They’re only limited editions at this stage, but they could become permanent fixtures of the Golf line-up depending on customer demand.
More information will be provided as it comes to hand.
