Volvo Cars’ performance arm, Polestar, reveals its first bespoke car, the 440kW 1000Nm hybrid Polestar 1 Coupe
Polestar has finally whipped the secretive covers of its first car, the somewhat unimaginatively named Polestar 1 coupe. Whilst the name may be a little bland, the grunt this thing will turn out will not be so dreary: 440kW and 1000Nm.
All this power and torque is produced by Volvo’s 2.0 litre turbo and supercharged petrol engine mated to two 80kW electric motors fitted to both axles. The system will also allow up to 150 km in pure electric mode.
The high performance tech doesn’t end there. That rather sexy 2+2 coupe body is largely fashioned from carbon fibre, there’s Ohlins shocks and six pot callipers along with 400mm slotted discs up front.
Polestar won’t actually be selling Polestar 1 models to customers. Instead, they’ll be leasing them for a fixed period and then refurbish them for the next users at the end of a period of up to three years. All costs are included in the lease too, bar petrol.
The Polestar 1 will be built in a new factory in China and sadly, as it’ll only be made in left hand drive, the electrifying coupe won’t make it down under. We’ll have to wait a while for Polestar’s next model, the Polestar 2, an SUV.
